Reference books:
        Beginning students:
The recommended book for beginning students is Tom Knauff's book
Flying Gliders - First Flight to Solo. This is a very readable text and covers the information
need for a beginning student through the first solo flight.

After solo, it is recommended that the student obtain the SSA's Soaring Flight Manual.
An alternative, if the student wants to continue with Tom Knauff's series is After Solo, however,
it is still recommended that the student obtain the Soaring Flight Manual as it will be used as a
reference for the rest of the pilot's soaring career.

        Transition students:
If you already have a rating to fly airplanes, the recommended book is Tom Knauff's book
Transition to Gliders. It is a very readable book that covers the differences between flying
gliders and flying airplanes. It is also recommended that at some point the pilot obtain the
SSA's Soaring Flight Manual as it will be used as a reference for the rest of the pilot's soaring career.

        All Students:
All students of gliding will want to obtain a copy of the Federal Aviation Regulations (parts 61 and 91)
and Airman's Information Manual prior to taking any practical test.
